When you’re in the middle of an exciting game of beach volleyball, you don’t want to have to stop the game for an injury. Before you get to spiking, setting, and jumping, know what common injuries you need to watch out for and how you can avoid them.


  1. Ankle Sprains

    The most common injury among volleyball players is ankle sprains. A volleyball player’s ankles take a lot of force as they repeatedly jump to get the ball. About 63% of all volleyball injuries are related to jumping, but ankle sprains are responsible for the most lost playing time. If you sprain your ankle, seek help from urgent care clinics immediately so that the injury doesn’t worsen. To avoid an ankle sprain, use an ankle brace or taping to prevent it from rolling over.

  2. Rotator Cuff Tendinitis

    Rotator cuff muscles are essential in moving your shoulder during serving and spiking. A tear of the rotator cuff is not too common, but tendinitis occurs when the muscles are irritated or fatigued from overuse. If you have rotator cuff tendinitis, you may feel persistent pain and should seek out pain care. You can prevent this sports injury by warming up your muscles by stretching beforehand and cooling down after a game.

  3. Finger Injuries

    During digging, blocking, and setting, a volleyball player’s fingers are very vulnerable to injury. Your fingers can be easily fractured or dislocated or you could tear a tendon or ligament. Get treatment from urgent care clinics quickly if you think you injured your finger. You can typically tell a finger is seriously injured when you are unable to bend it. Prevent finger injuries by practicing proper techniques so that your fingers aren’t in danger.

  4. Patellar TendinitisPatellar Tendinitis is the inflammation of the tendon connecting the kneecap to the shin bone. This inflammation is common in any sport in which the athlete has to repeatedly perform forceful jumping activities, such as spiking and blocking. If you feel pain around your knees, seek medical help soon after so that the condition does not worsen. You can work to prevent it by strengthening the surrounding knee muscles and doing the proper stretches.

A volleyball game is meant to be an enjoyable time for all, but it can quickly turn into a downer when someone is injured. Take care of yourself and seek medical help as quickly as possible if you feel like something is wrong.
