A COVID antibody test is a blood test that can tell if you have antibodies to the COVID-19 virus. This can be helpful in determining if you have had the virus in the past, and may now be immune to it. Presence of antibodies could also indicate immunity as a result of prior vaccinations. Antibody tests are not currently recommended for the diagnosis of active COVID-19 infection.
These tests can be performed with a blood sample or a swab from inside your nose. The test looks for antibodies, (which are proteins that your body produces in response to an infection). If the test is positive, it means that you have COVID-19 antibodies in your blood and that you have likely been infected with the COVID-19 virus. Antibody tests can help to identify people who have been infected with the COVID-19 virus, and who may be able to donate plasma to help treat other patients.
types of tests
There are two types of COVID antibody tests- rapid and laboratory. Rapid tests can give results in minutes, while laboratory tests may take a few days. Rapid antibody is a finger stick to collect a couple drops of blood, and gives results in as little as15 minutes. Lab antibody testing is a formal blood draw that goes to the lab and gives results usually within 1-3 days.
Similarly to rapid antigen COVID tests, COVID antibody tests are less accurate than laboratory COVID antibody tests. This means that they may sometimes give false positive results, (showing that someone has antibodies when they really don't), or false negative results, (showing that someone does not have antibodies when they really do).
If you get a positive result on a rapid COVID antibody test, it's important to follow up with a laboratory COVID antibody test to confirm the result. If you get a negative result on a rapid COVID antibody test, it's possible that you could still have antibodies to COVID-19. It's also possible that the test just wasn't sensitive enough to detect them.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Get answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about COVID, and the various types of diagnostic tests to find out if you have it.
The rapid diagnostic test, (also referred to as the rapid antigen test), is a type of test that looks for antibodies in the blood that are produced in response to a viral infection. Antibodies are proteins that help the body fight off infections.
There is no clear cut definitive answer as to how long antibodies stay in your system. They may be detected in your blood for several months or more, (depending on the severity of the infection, and the individual).
After a COVID vaccine, you may test positive for antibodies. Please note, however, that this does not indicate a specific level of protection or immunity from SARS-CoV-2 infection.
There are two main types of tests available for detecting COVID-19 antibodies: antigen tests and antibody tests. Antigen tests are typically faster and more accurate, but they are also more expensive. Antigen tests work by detecting the presence of the virus itself, while antibody tests work by detecting the body's immune response to the virus. If you have severe symptoms or are at high risk for complications from COVID-19, an antigen test may be the best option. However, if you are asymptomatic, or have mild symptoms, an antibody test may be a better choice.
A high level of COVID-19 antibodies in your blood indicates that you have had a previous infection, and your body has developed immunity to the virus. This means that you are unlikely to get infected again, and may even be able to help others who are still vulnerable.
At this time, it is unknown exactly what level of COVID antibodies are protective. According to the CDC, scientists are currently using antibody tests to learn more about the level of antibodies that is needed for protection from COVID-19, and exactly how long that protection may last.
