Sports injuries are unfortunately all too common. While some are relatively minor, others can be quite serious, even debilitating. The good news is that with proper diagnosis and treatment, most sports injuries can be fully healed.
There are three main types of sports injuries:

sprains

Sprains occur when ligaments (the tissues that connect bones to one another) are stretched or torn.

strains

Strains occur when muscles or tendons (the tissues that connect muscle to bone) are stretched or torn.

fractures

Fractures occur when bones are broken.
Sprains and strains can be treated with rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE). This will help reduce swelling and pain. Fractures, however, require more serious treatment, which may include surgery.

If you think you may have suffered a sports injury, it's important to see a practicioner as soon as possible. With proper treatment, most sports injuries will heal completely and you'll be back on the field or court in no time!

NCUC EXPERTLY TREATS YOUR SPORTS INJURY NEEDS
Learning the differences between a sprain, strain, and a fracture is essential for any athlete. Dr. Doonan’s experience as both a doctor and an athlete helps him be the very best in sports injury treatment.

SPRAINS

A sprain occurs when ligaments (the tight bands of fibrous tissue that link two bones in your joints) stretch or rip. An ankle sprain is the most common type of sprain. Mild sprains can be treated successfully at home. To heal torn ligaments in severe sprains, surgery is sometimes required. Trust us to get you healed quickly.

STRAINS

A strain is an injury to a muscle or tendon. Muscles are the tissues that help us move our bodies, and tendons are the tissues that connect muscle to bone. The most common type of strain occurs in the back, but they can also occur in the legs, arms, and other parts of the body. Strains can range from mild to severe. Mild strains may only cause a little pain and swelling, while severe strains can cause pain, swelling, bruising, and even muscle weakness. NCUC can get you on the road to recovery.

FRACTURES

A whole or partial break in the continuity of bone tissue is known as a bone fracture. Any bone in the body can be fractured. A bone can be fractured in a number of different ways. Fractures can take weeks or months to heal, depending on how severe they are. The length of time depends on which bone has been injured and whether any complications exist, such as a blood supply problem or an infection. Let us help you heal.

CLOSED VS. COMPLEX FRACTURES

A closed fracture, for example, is a bone break that does not injure surrounding tissue or rip the skin. A complex fracture, on the other hand, affects the surrounding tissue and penetrates the skin. Because of the potential of infection, compound fractures are often more serious than simple fractures. Complex fractures will most likely need to be evaluated in an emergency room because they are at a higher risk of instability, infection, and malunion. They would also require an ORIF procedure, which is only performed by a specialist.

WHEN TO SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION FOR A SPORTS INJURY

The first thing a physician associate will do is assess your injury and ask you how it happened. They'll also ask about your medical history and whether you're taking any medication that could potentially interact with treatment for your injury.

Once they have all of the necessary information, they'll create a treatment plan for you. This may involve prescribing medication, ordering X-rays or other tests, or referring you to a specialist. We care about getting your injuries healed.
