1. Frequently Washing Your Hands
The easiest way to prevent the spreading of viruses and bacteria is by washing your hands, and teach your kids to do the same! So before every meal, after visiting public places or even after using the restroom, remind yourself and your kids to be in the habit of washing up and staying healthy.
2. Change your Toothbrush After Getting Sick
May sound silly but Flu and Cold bacteria can hide in your toothbrush and can re-spread themselves through your mouth! Once you or a spouse have been infected with whatever sickness it may be, throw away the brush and upgrade to a new, bacteria free brush that could help towards keeping you and your family sickness free this holiday season.
3. Keep the House Bright
Every year thousands of people go through something called Seasonal Affective Disorder or S.A.D., a malady of mood swings that occurs when light diminishes in winter. Ways to help keep this from occurring this year is to keep everyone active and in the sun when its out, take vitamin D and brightening up your living space when the rains come and there’s so sun in sight.
4. Drink More Water
As winter comes you may not feel as thirsty in the cold weather, which can put you at risk for dehydration. Water helps the body carry nutrients to cells and get rid of toxins, leaving us vulnerable to sickness. We recommend drinking half your body weight in ounces, so if you weigh 120 lbs, than drink 60 oz. of water.
5. Fill Up on Fiber
Fiber is a key ingredient to keeping us healthy! It strengthens the immune system and reduces inflammation. So eating 25 grams of fiber daily, easily found in foods like oats, nuts, wheat, and apples can help. Everyone knows what the Doctor says about an apple a day…
Finally the best way to staying healthy is by relaxing. As the holidays come it can be so hard to stay relaxed as we plan vacations or invite friends and family over for celebrations. But stress can cause illness for two main reasons, our immune system does not function well when we are stressed, and we are more likely to engage in unhealthy habits such as ‘Ben and Jerry’s’ therapy. So try your best after a stressful day to kick back, watch a movie, or breath easy and enjoy these moments with friends and family. You and your body with be happy you did!
